“I am 32 years old and my husband and my first child is an albino. The problem is with my in-laws, I feel people are teasing me about my baby because in our culture the firstborn is suppose to look like the father. My heart is broken and I want to go back to my family home and stay there with my baby. I feel my child will never be happy at his father’s place. I am so worried about falling pregnant again. What if I have another child that is not acceptable to my husband’s family?” – Coceka, Idutywa
Dear Coceka
I am so sorry to hear that you are having problems with your husband’s family. I know how difficult people can be, especially the in-laws. What is your husband doing about it? If he really loves you, he should be with you and give you all the support he can. This will minimise the problems you have with your in-laws and the community. There is nothing wrong with an albino child irrespective of whether it is the firstborn or the last-born.  Talk to your husband and suggest that you all move out and live somewhere else, even if it is a two-roomed rented place. It is often difficult to live with the in-laws because they can interfere with your personal life. I think you should consult social workers for counselling to ease the burden on your shoulders. I say this because you are both in a very difficult situation and you both need professional advice. I advise you and your husband to attend counselling. I wish you and the baby all the best.
