Dear Aunty Lisa
My girlfriend and I love having oral sex but a mate told me it can cause throat cancer. Is that true? Have we got to give up a very special part of our sex life?
We’ve been together for almost a year and we have a really good relationship. I’m 32 and my girlfriend’s 30.
The sex is fantastic in every way. Neither of us has had that many partners but we are both really worried now.
I thought you could only get throat cancer through smoking or drinking large quantities of alcohol but now I’m not so sure.
We both enjoy oral sex so will it be safe for me to keep going down on her in future? Can she keep giving me blowjobs?
Is there anything we can do to protect ourselves to minimise the risk, or would it now be best to avoid oral sex altogether and just have intercourse. I am too embarrassed to talk to my doctor about it.
